Muslims Condemn oppression against Sikhs

Dallas, Texas

We the Muslims, condemn the oppression of Sikhs in Taliban held territory of Pakistan, and urge the government of Pakistan to immediately put these lawless individual men behind bars for evaluation and rehabilitation. It is the duty of every government to keep law and order and faithfully guard the safety of every citizen.

A Muslim stands up against oppression, and the harassment of Sikhs by the Taliban is one that needs to be checked immediately. This is an act of gross arrogance of those in power abusing religion to their own end; we should not let bad guys use religion for their gain, shame on us if we let these evil men act in the name of Islam again, as they did on September 11. Time has come to put an end to this bullyism.

Oppression is one of the most evil elements in Islam and we have an obligation to stand up for that value.

We welcome the statement by the Indian Muslim Leaders and urge the Muslims leaders around the world to add their name in the comments section below. We also invite all such condemnations for posting on this site.

Joint Statement of Indian Muslim leaders

Pakistani Taliban’s treatment of Sikhs in tribal areas is illegal and barbaric
We, religious, political and community leaders of the Indian Muslims, are alarmed at the reports coming out of Pakistan’s tribal areas about the Pakistani Taliban’s kidnapping, extortion of huge amounts of money from their Sikh compatriots as “Jizya” and demolition of the houses and shops of those who fail to pay the demanded sums.

We would like to say that Jizya is a tax paid in an Islamic state for exemption from military service by healthy non-Muslim adults who are free to follow their vocations without restriction or fear, and that there is no other tax payable by them after paying this tax, unlike Muslims who have to pay various taxes including Zakat and have to perform military service as well.

Jizya was payable by non-Muslims only in lands conquered by Muslims like Egypt, Syria and Iraq but not in unconquered areas like Madina where during the time of the Holy Prophet no Jizya was ever imposed on non-Muslim citizens who enjoyed equal rights and duties under the Constitution of Madina. For many centuries Jizya has not been levied by Muslim states and today even the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Islamic Republic of Iran do not levy Jizya on non-Muslims for the simple reason that non-Muslims in these states pay all taxes payable by others. Prominent Islamic scholars of the modern times like Shaikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi are of the view that Jizya should not be imposed now as non-Muslims are equal citizens of Muslim states and pay all taxes paid by other citizens and shoulder all the duties.

We wish to make it clear that the imposition of the so-called Jizya is nothing more than extortion by an armed and lawless gang which does not constitute a sovereign government or state or even an organ thereof. Moreover, Pakistan’s tribal areas are not “conquered lands” as their non-Muslim population has been living there for centuries. These areas were part of the British India and became part of the new State of Pakistan as a result of peaceful transfer of power on Partition.

As regards the huge amounts in millions reported to be demanded, these are arbitrary and exorbitant as the amount of annual Jizya paid by non-Muslims in early Islam was merely one to one and a half dinar, which is 4.24 gram to 6.36 grams of gold. Moreover, this tax was payable only at the end of the year and not in advance.

We regard this as an act of injustice incompatible with the letter and spirit of Islam and the international covenants accepted by all Muslim states.

We demand that the Pakistani authorities must take earliest steps to retrieve the extorted sums and pay them back to their affected non-Muslim citizens and facilitate their peaceful return to their homes and properties in their traditional homelands and give them all due protection.

I condemn this barbaric act against Sikhs, who had been living in that area for generations. In addition to the Government of Pakistan, it is the duty of Muslim leaders and peace-loving and literate public to denounce this nefarious activity and demand a heavy punishment to the perpetrators of such unpatriotic actions.-

  2. "Jaziya" on Pakistani Sikhs is Challenge to Judiciary and Muslim Clergy of Pakistan: Call for Solidarity Against Injustice

As soon as the Nizam-e-Adl [Justice] Regulation was signed on April 15 formally enforcing the Taliban’s version of sharia laws in Swat, the impoverished Sikh community living in Orakzai Agency was asked to pay jaziya. Jaziya was a special tax levied centuries ago on non-Muslims under Islamic rule when they were exempt from Army duties and did not pay any other tax. It is no more enforced anywhere now. Mogul rulers of seventeenth century promulgated the same tax on non-Muslims in India; those who protested were executed. However, the Mogul rulers paid a heavy price by demolishing their kingdom as a result.
In Orakzai, Sikh citizens were asked to pay nearly a million dollars in special tax. When they could not, they were removed from their ancestral homes and businesses that were then looted and unscrupulously destroyed. The Sikh men were tortured and warned that any attempt to escape would lead to slaying of men and forcible conversion of women and children to Islam.
Imposing a special tax on people of a different religion is against all tenets of religious beliefs including Islam and is certainly all social norms. It is cruelty and blackmail imposed on helpless people. Thus, it should be protested in the strongest terms by the civilized world of all faiths and political beliefs. We are pleased that people of Pakistan are raizing voices against it. In this day and age of modernity and interfaith understanding such acts should not be tolerated by any one, particularly peace loving Muslim communities of Pakistan.
The Pakistani lawyers who took to the streets to bring back an independent judiciary might take notice of this news. They know that there is lot of goodwill between the people of Pakistan and non-Muslim minorities living there. There is also new understanding of Islam that does not permit cruelty that was levied on the Pakistani Sikhs. The President and Prime Minters of Pakistan will do well if they make use of this goodwill and mobilize the government forces as well as the will of their people to extend helping hand to the Sikhs under persecution as well as build the confidence of all minorities under their protection. The affected Sikhs should be rehabilitated and compensated.
There is a need to send a strong message to the guilty that people of Pakistan and the civilized world around the globe will not tolerate this behavior. Islam will consider them guilty of a bid’ah [sinful innovation] in this instance. Those who swear by human rights must condemn such irreligious and inhuman acts.

Planned Muslim Response to Qur'an Burning by Pastor Jones on September 11 in Mulberry, Florida

PLANNED MUSLIMS RESPONSE TO QUR'AN BURNING BY PASTOR JONES ON 9/11/13 IN MULBERRY, FLORIDA

We as Muslims plan to respond to pastor Terry Jones' planned burning of 3000 copies of Quran on September 11, 2013 in positive terms.

Our response - we will reclaim the standard of behavior practiced by the Prophet concerning “scurrilous and hostile criticism of the Qur’an” (Muhammad Asad Translation Note 31, verse 41:34). It was "To overcome evil with good is good, and to resist evil by evil is evil." It is also strongly enjoined in the Qur’an in the same verse 41:34, “Good and evil deeds are not equal. Repel evil with what is better; then you will see that one who was once your enemy has become your dearest friend.”

God willing Muslims will follow the divine guidance and pray for the restoration of Goodwill, and on that day many Muslim organizations will go on a “blood drive” to save lives and serve humanity with kindness.

We invite fellow Americans of all faiths, races, and ethnicities to join us to rededicate the pledge, “One nation under God”, and to build a cohesive America where no American has to live in apprehension, discomfort or fear of fellow Americans. This event is a substitute for our 10th Annual Unity Day Celebration (www.UnitydayUSA.com) held in Dallas, but now it will be at Mulberry, Florida.

Unwittingly Pastor Jones has done us a favor by invigorating us by his decision to burn nearly 3000 copies Quran on September 11, 2013. Obviously he is not satisfied by the notoriety he garnered by burning one Qur'an last year.

As Muslims and citizens we honor the free speech guaranteed in our constitution. We have no intentions to criticize, condemn or oppose Pastor Terry Jones' freedom of expression. Instead, we will be donating blood and praying for goodness to permeate in our society.

We plan to follow Jesus Christ (pbuh), a revered prophet in Islam as well as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) – that of mitigating the conflicts and nurturing good will for the common good of the society.

We hope, this event and the message will remind Muslims elsewhere in the world as well, that violence is not the way. Muslims, who react violently to senseless provocation, should realize that, violence causes more violence, and besmirches the name of the religion that we hold so dear. We believe that Prophet Muhammad was a mercy to the mankind, and we ought to practice what we believe and preach. We must not insult Islam by the negative reactions of a few.

We can only hope it will bring about a change in the attitude of the followers of Pastor Jones, and in the behavior of those Muslims who reacted violently the last time Pastor sought notoriety – We hope this small step towards a bridge to peaceful coexistence would propel us towards building a cohesive society.

Like most Americans a majority of Muslims quietly go about their own business, but it is time to speak up and take positive action instead of negative reaction. May this message of peace and goodwill reverberate and reach many shores.

Lastly, we appreciate the Citizens of Mulberry, Florida, Honorable Mayor George Hatch, City Commissioners, police and Fire Chiefs for handing this situation very well. This will add a ‘feather of peace’ in the City’s reputation. We hope Mulberry will be a catalyst in showing the way in handling conflict with dignity and peace.

We thank the Media for giving value to the work towards peace rather than conflict.

CIVIL DIALOGUE

The people in Dallas are making an effort to understand and clean their own hearts first, when we are free from bias, it would be easy to share that with others. Islam teaches us in so many ways to "respect the otherness of others" and it is time we find simple practical ways of doing it.
